“Embarrassing” AEK title celebrations mocked after owner’s bizarre Eurovision-style speech

AEK Athens owner Marios Iliopoulos has been widely mocked online after delivering what many fans described as an “embarrassing” speech during the club’s title celebrations.

After AEK secured the league title, Iliopoulos grabbed the microphone and launched into a lengthy monologue that quickly drifted away from football and into subjects including corruption, banks, journalists, politics, drugs and the future of Greek society.

With emotional shouting, theatrical pauses and microphone effects that sounded more like a late-night karaoke performance than a football speech, clips from the celebrations rapidly spread across social media.

“Fasten your seatbelts again,” Iliopoulos warned supporters. “Those who didn’t put them on before should put them on now because turbulence is coming.”

The AEK owner also claimed that “the pimping system is finished forever” while insisting the club had defeated “a system of many decades”.

At another stage of the speech, he declared: “AEK is not just a team, it is an idea, it is a movement, it is a way of life.”

The reaction online was brutal.

“One of the most embarrassing fiesta celebrations I’ve ever seen. Thank God for Iliopoulos because at least he made us laugh,” one fan wrote.

Another joked: “Iliopoulos just gave us a sneak peek of the political speech we might hear soon.”

A third posted: “What kind of performance is Iliopoulos giving? Is he singing? Trying to perform lyrics? This is like an old Greek TV circus show.”

Others were left stunned by how quickly the celebrations turned away from football.

“People went there to celebrate a league title and ended up at the circus,” another fan wrote. “Without irony, the things Iliopoulos is doing make absolutely no sense.”

One viral post read: “Is Iliopoulos running for parliament or what? Leave the fans to enjoy the title. Why is he talking about systemic banks during a football fiesta?”

Iliopoulos is no stranger to controversy. In 2019, the UK Commercial Court ruled that the Greek shipping magnate had orchestrated the deliberate destruction of the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso as part of a failed insurance fraud scheme linked to a supposed pirate attack off Yemen in 2011. Iliopoulos has always denied wrongdoing and was never criminally convicted in the UK.
