A “bigger and better” Body Shop returns this week, headed by the beauty retailer’s relaunch Tuesday (8 September) unveiling its “modernised, all-new skin-matching product”, Shea Body Butter.
The Body Shop
Based on the brand’s cult staple “that created an entire category across its 33-year history”, it features a “spectrum” of custom-engineered textures, up to 72-hour hydration, zero white cast on darker skin tones, and “fast-absorbing formulas”. It’s priced: £7 (50ml), £19 (200ml), and £38 (400ml).
It makes sense for the retailer to revisit – but also to reinvent – some of its iconic products from its glory days. Those are the kinds of items that lapsed customers will remember but that new ones will hopefully latch onto given their updated formulas.
Spanning 11 variants, the rejuvenated line-up “is designed to demystify body care by pairing targeted textures directly to specific skin types and needs”.
It includes lightweight creams (normal to dry skin) with British Rose, Satsuma, and Almond Milk formulas “ideal as entry-level body care or for sensitive skin”; rich creams (dry skin) formulations (including Olive) serving as a “rich daily cream or a lighter summer option for very dry skins”; nourishing balms (dry to very dry skin) with its hero product, Shea, with a balm texture infused with 14% Community Fair Trade shea butter “to visibly condition rough, dry areas and leave a gentle sheen”; and ultra-rich heavy-duty repair (ultra-dry & sensitive skin) with a special hemp formula offers a heavy-duty, barrier-reinforcing texture with essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids “to deliver 48-hour moisture and combat severe dehydration.”
The Body Shop said it’s “reclaiming body care from ‘Looksmaxxing’… pushing back against overwhelming social media trends. The accompanying campaign “frames daily body moisturising not as an aesthetic project, but as a ‘small act of resistance’ to give your mind headspace.”
Later this year the company is due to unveil its sustainability roadmap, putting itself back at the forefront of the sustainability drive in which it was once a global leader.
