Troy Parrott has all the makings of a true Irish megastar according to former international Jeff Hendrick, who has backed the striker to become a national icon as he continues his impressive form at Real Betis.
Parrot has enjoyed an impressive start to life in Spain, finding the net in both La Liga and the Champions League for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who third behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Comparing Parrott’s rising status in the Ireland squad to Scott McTominay’s pivotal role for Scotland, Hendrick insists the 24-year-old forward is relishing the responsibility of being the main man for both club and country.
Hendrick on Parrott and McTominay comparisons
“Scott McTominay is the key man for Scotland and it’s hard to compare, but Troy’s been in unbelievable form”, Hendrick told Andy’s Bet Club. He’s got his move and he’s becoming a talisman that people can rely on.
“Now at Betis, you’ve seen the goals he’s scored already, he’s settled in quick. He will relish having that. Even with Ireland, he wants to be the main guy and play every game. It won’t be something he shies away from. He’s a fan favourite now. Whoever he’s played for over the last three years, whether it’s national team or club level, he’s really grown into the role.”
Beyond his goals on the pitch, Hendrick noted that Parrott possesses the off-field charisma and style needed to become a major figure for the next generation of soccer fans.
“I think Troy Parrott can be a megastar in Ireland, yeah. If anyone sees Troy on social media, he tries to dress well and look cool, so there’s no reason why not,” Hendrick explained.
However, the midfielder emphasized that maintaining high standards on the pitch remains the foundation for any long-term superstardom.
“He’s doing the business on the pitch, and that’s the main thing for us, he has to keep doing that. If you’re not doing the business on the pitch, you won’t be this sort of icon people are looking at,” Hendrick added. “But 100%, with the way the game is going with brand deals and just being someone kids look up to, that’s definitely going to be him.”
