Rays help boost MLB attendance

Rays’ Return to Tropicana Field Sparks Leaguewide Attendance Growth

Major League Baseball closed the 2026 regular season with its strongest attendance since 2017, reaching 71.75 million fans and marking a fourth straight year of growth. The Tampa Bay Rays played a central role in that surge. Their return to Tropicana Field after a season at Steinbrenner Field produced the biggest year‑over‑year increase in the sport, lifting league totals and energizing the AL East race.

Teams averaged 29,589 fans across 2,425 dates, a slight rise from last year’s 29,471 average. The league has not posted four consecutive seasons of attendance growth since 2004 through 2007, underscoring a renewed momentum across markets.

Tampa Bay Delivers MLB’s Largest Attendance Jump

The Rays’ attendance climbed by 628,255 to 1,414,975 as the club captured its first AL East title since 2021. Their temporary home at Steinbrenner Field held just 10,046 seats during the 2025 season, but the return to The Trop allowed crowds to swell to more than 28,000. The combination of a division title, a restored home stadium, and a competitive roster made Tampa Bay one of the league’s strongest attendance drivers.

Dodgers Lead the Majors Again

Five clubs topped the three‑million mark, matching 2024. The Los Angeles Dodgers led MLB with a franchise‑record 4,034,219 fans, averaging 49,805 as they continued their run as the sport’s most reliable draw. Toronto, fresh off its 2025 AL pennant, climbed by nearly 489,000 to 3,338,878. Seattle added more than 345,000 fans after coming within one win of its first World Series appearance.

Chicago’s White Sox also posted a significant rise, adding 540,687 fans while earning an AL wild card berth following three straight 100‑loss seasons.

Mets, Astros, and Several Clubs See Declines

The New York Mets absorbed the largest drop, falling by 472,450 to 2,712,120 after a 12‑game losing streak in April and a last‑place finish in the NL East. Houston, despite winning the AL West with an 81‑81 record, slipped by more than 255,000. Kansas City, Arizona, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Colorado, and Philadelphia each saw decreases between 100,000 and 200,000.

The Athletics, still based at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento ahead of their planned 2028 move to Las Vegas, recorded the league’s lowest attendance at 799,240. Their average of 9,867 included six games played at Las Vegas Ballpark.

Miami dropped from 28th to 29th in total attendance, finishing at 1,231,018.

A Strong Finish and a Clear Trend

With Tampa Bay’s return to Tropicana Field anchoring the league’s biggest single‑team increase, MLB’s attendance momentum continues to build. The 2026 season delivered competitive races, improved ballpark experiences, and a renewed sense of stability across most markets. Baseball enters 2027 with its healthiest attendance trend in nearly a decade — and with Tampa Bay once again proving how much impact one energized fan base can make.
