USF hits the road to face Temple

Bulls chase 5‑0 start as they host the Owls in Conference home opener

South Florida enters Week 5 with a historic 4‑0 record, marking the program’s best start since 2018. That season began 7‑0 under Charlie Strong, and the Bulls now have a chance to build on their strongest opening in eight years. The matchup at Temple represents USF’s first road game of the season and a chance to prove its early momentum can travel.

How USF reached its perfect start

The Bulls have stacked wins in multiple styles, showing resilience, explosiveness, and defensive growth. They opened the season with a 19‑9 win over FIU, followed by a dramatic 28‑24 victory at Army. The Delaware State game delivered one of the most dominant offensive performances in program history, with 611 total yards and seven rushing touchdowns in a 59‑17 win. Last week’s 14‑6 road victory at Bowling Green showed USF could win a defensive battle when needed.

The 4‑0 mark places South Florida among just 22 unbeaten teams nationally. It also extends the Bulls’ home win streak to nine games and continues a run of 18 wins in their last 24 contests dating back to mid‑2024.

Key performers driving the Bulls’ rise

Quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. has been efficient and steady, completing 70 percent of his passes and delivering a 300‑yard performance against Delaware State. Running back D.J. Crowther powered the offense with three touchdowns and 101 yards in that same game. On defense, Zavier Hamilton and Ayden Jackson each posted six tackles, helping anchor a unit that has tightened up in recent weeks.

Temple presents a meaningful early‑season test

Temple has struggled in recent seasons but remains a tough, physical opponent at home. The Owls will aim to disrupt USF’s rhythm and force the Bulls into long drives. For South Florida, the focus is maintaining discipline, avoiding turnovers, and continuing to build offensive consistency.

The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU, giving the Bulls a national stage to showcase their progress.

What’s at stake for South Florida

A win would push USF to 5‑0 for the first time since 2018 and further solidify the Bulls as one of the American Conference’s rising contenders. It would also reinforce the program’s turnaround, which has been marked by improved quarterback play, a deeper run game, and a defense capable of closing out tight contests.

South Florida’s historic start has already captured attention. Now the Bulls look to take the next step — proving they can stay perfect on the road and keep momentum rolling into October.
