The political arm of House Democrats just launched a series of Spanish-language ads highlighting high gas prices. Four of the five targeted districts are in Florida, including one where the party hasn’t yet listed the incumbent as a target.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) will run digital ads on Facebook and Instagram that specifically target Republican U.S. Reps. Carlos Giménez of Miami-Dade County, Laurel Lee of Thonotosassa, Cory Mills of New Smyrna Beach, and María Elvira Salazar of Coral Gables.
While Lee, Mills and Salazar all represent seats listed by the DCCC as “Districts in Play,” this marks the first time this election cycle the DCCC has purchased ads reaching voters in Florida’s 28th Congressional District, represented by Giménez.
But House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, immediately after Democrats won two legislative Special Elections last month, said the party should consider expanding the map and targeting Florida Republican U.S. Reps. Mario Díaz-Balart, Brian Mast and Giménez.
The Spanish ads show an image of a gas pump, stickered with the name and face of the targeted Republican incumbent and the words “¡Es mi Cupla!,” which translated to “That’s my fault!” in English.
All of the districts targeted in Florida, and one in Texas represented by U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz, have a high percentage of Hispanic voters, a demographic the DCCC hopes to see swing back toward Democrats two years after many backed President Donald Trump.
“Republicans have turned their backs on Latino families and have consistently ignored their demands to bring down rising costs,” said DCCC Latino Engagement Director José Monsivais. “Latino voters know Republicans are to blame — and they will send them packing in November.”
The ads are part of a larger “Our Power, Our Country” engagement effort by the DCCC to specifically engage voters of color and rural voters. That includes engaging Latino voters in districts deemed essential to efforts to flip the House to Democratic control.
