Former state Rep. George Moraitis is refocusing his U.S. House campaign on Florida’s 25th Congressional District, as redrawn by state lawmakers.
This week, Republicans in Florida’s Legislature pushed through a congressional map that Gov. Ron DeSantis’ Office designed to be more advantageous to GOP candidates in the Midterms, as President Donald Trump encouraged.
One of the most eye-catching changes was CD 25, which went from covering south and central Broward County to spanning the southeast coast from Delray Beach in Palm Beach County, through Broward and into Miami Beach in Miami-Dade County.
Moraitis said that area “deserves a representative who will fight for our families, protect our freedoms, and deliver real results.”
“That’s why I’m running,” he said in a statement. “We’ve been honored to have earned so much support from our community over the last year, and now we are the best positioned candidate to win this race.”
Moraitis, a real estate lawyer and Navy submarine veteran who represented Palm Beach and Broward counties in the Florida House from 2010 to 2018, enters the new CD 25 race having raised nearly $700,000 this cycle, including $110,000 in self-loans, in his prior bid for Florida’s 23rd Congressional District.
He entered April with $214,400 on hand.
He has also notched several notable endorsements, including nods from U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis, Jake Ellzey, Scott Franklin, Mike Haridopolos and Greg Steube, and 20 current and former local elected officials.
Moraitis lives in Fort Lauderdale and previously served as Chair of the Broward Republican Party.
Before the map changed, he became the first candidate in Florida’s 23rd Congressional District to qualify by petition.
According to his campaign, Moraitis is running on a platform focused on strengthening national security, securing the border, expanding American energy production, cutting wasteful spending, supporting “pro-family” tax policies and making homeownership more affordable.
“I’ve spent my life serving this country and this community,” he said. “Now I’m ready to serve again — to put South Florida families first and get things done in Washington.”
Moraitis is already on track to face at least one Primary opponent: Former Boca Raton Mayor Scott Singer, who similarly pivoted from the contest for CD 23, which Democratic U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz represents, for CD 25
Many more candidates are likely to file or refile for CD 25 in the coming days and weeks.
The Primary is Aug. 18, followed by the General Election on Nov. 3.
