Kathy Castor, Anna Paulina Luna both want embattled Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, Cory Mills to resign

Two members of Florida’s congressional delegation from both sides of the aisle say U.S. Reps. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick and Cory Mills should no longer serve in Congress.

Both U.S. Reps. Kathy Castor and Anna Paulina Luna told Florida Politics that the two scandalized members need to resign. The outlet asked every member of the state’s House delegation if the lawmakers should either quit or be expelled.

Castor said yes on all counts.

“Public office is a public trust, and these politicians have been afforded extraordinary due process. It is plain that they have violated the public trust. They should resign immediately,” the Tampa Democrat said.

“The (Donald) Trump era is rife with corruption and self-dealing. It’s wrong. It’s sickening. We have too much to do to tackle the crushing cost of living to be distracted by drawn-out ethics scandals. They should resign now.”

Luna also said the officials need to leave their positions over personal scandals that have increasingly hounded them over the last year.

“My position has been clear. If someone is engaging in criminal conduct and illegal activity they need to resign from Congress and I refuse to cover for your ass,” the Pinellas Republican said.

Cherfilus-McCormick, a Miramar Democrat, is under criminal indictment for allegedly stealing more than $5 million in disaster funding and using it to finance her congressional campaign in 2021. A House Ethics adjudication panel recently found her guilty of 25 charges of violating House rules and ethical guidelines.

Mills, a New Smyrna Beach Republican, remains under House investigation over allegations of profiting from defense contracts in Congress, dating violence, threatening to release intimate images of a former girlfriend, and exaggerating his military record.

Notably, Luna has publicly said if Cherfilus-McCormick doesn’t resign by the time a House Ethics Committee recommends sanctions next week, she and others will push for an immediate vote on her expulsion. She hasn’t directly addressed the prospect of expelling Mills, but last year said he should not seek re-election.

Castor made clear that if either Cherfilus-McCormick or Mills failed to resign, the House should swiftly expel them.
