William Gallas backs Kylian Mbappé for history but warns of fierce Golden Boot battle

France sensation Kylian Mbappe has been projected to make history this summer by winning the World Cup Golden Boot ahead of England captain Harry Kane

Kylian Mbappé is destined to become the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer and write himself into record books, even if he faces a brutal crowd of rivals for the 2026 Golden Boot, according to former France defender William Gallas.

The ex-Chelsea and Arsenal centre-back believes that, while Mbappé is fully focused on delivering for Les Bleus, the forward is also deeply driven by personal milestones.

Gallas is confident that the Real Madrid star will eventually overtake Lionel Messi at the top of the World Cup-scoring charts, even if it takes time.

Kylian Mbappé tipped for World Cup history

“He’s going to break it, even if he doesn’t do it in this World Cup,” Gallas told talkSPORT Bet. “I think he wants one more trophy and the Golden Boot.”

For France, the pressure to perform on the world stage is always immense. But Gallas admits that for a player of Mbappé’s caliber, individual honors are naturally part of the equation.

“This World Cup is very important for the French nation, but it’s also important for him to try to be the top scorer,” he added.
Securing that individual crown won’t be straightforward, though. Gallas pointed out that a handful of the world’s most relentless forwards are already hitting their stride, meaning Mbappé will have to fight off both the new generation and some familiar legendary figures.

“We have to wait because, as I mentioned, Erling Haaland started very well and we will see what Cristiano Ronaldo does,” Gallas cautioned.

The threat isn’t just coming from Haaland, either. Gallas expects England captain Harry Kane to be right in the thick of the race as well after a prolific start to the World Cup, predicting a frantic, multi-player shootout for the Golden Boot.

“We have Harry Kane too,” Gallas said. “I think there are almost five players who can fight for the Golden Boot.”
