Trade show Pitti Filati 96 visited by 2,850 buyers, UK and US attendance rises

Despite the far from positive trend the yarn spinning sector is experiencing, with a 6.2% slump expected in 2024, Italian producers are staying positive, their upbeat attitude evident at the Pitti Filati 96 trade show. The event was held in Florence on January 28-30 at the Fortezza da Basso venue, gathering together 116 exhibitors and 2,850 buyers, 1,050 of whom came from 50 countries outside Italy.

Attendance was up from the UK, the USA, Russia, Portugal and Belgium, while the number for buyers from Switzerland, Turkey and China posted a slight decrease. In absolute terms, France topped the ranking, followed by the UK, the USA, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, Japan, China, Russia, Portugal, and Belgium.
 
“Once again, Pitti Filati has reaffirmed its role as the industry’s benchmark event. It is the only platform that offers all levels of the supply chain the highest standards of research and creativity in the world of yarns,” said Raffaello Napoleone, CEO of show organiser Pitti Immagine. “At the Fortezza, with the new collections and company innovations, we witnessed the exceptional adaptability that the yarn manufacturing sector is deploying to meet market demands and support its evolution. These three days of intense business revealed a widespread sense of confidence, with industry professionals anticipating a trend reversal in fashion by Spring/Summer 2026 – early signs of which were already visible in this presentation cycle,” he added.

“These three days were filled with energy and creative interaction for all industry professionals. It was an essential and irreplaceable opportunity for dialogue, a mutual push towards research and creativity across all phases of knitwear production,” said Agostino Poletto, managing director of Pitti Immagine.

“The same sentiment was echoed in the feedback we gathered from buyers – including design teams from the most prestigious Italian and international fashion brands – as well as from exhibitors at the Fortezza. A major contribution in this direction came from the ‘Spazio Ricerca – Body of Light’ section curated by Angelo Figus, Carrie Hollands, and Manuela Sandroni – once again an unmissable destination for insights into future trends. Other pivotal contributions came from the ‘CustomEasy’ and ‘KnitClub’ sections, with their in-depth exploration of customisation and knitting techniques. Likewise, the ‘Vintage Selection’ section – the show within the show dedicated to vintage fashion – proved to be an endless source of inspiration for the design teams attending [Pitti] Filati,” added Poletto.

Amy Powney exits Mother of Pearl, launches new label, Akyn

UK fashion will have a new label this spring with the debut of Akyn. And the creative force behind it? Amy Powney, who’s best known as creative director of Mother of Pearl.

Powney, who’s also well know for her sustainability commitment, has stepped down from Mother of Pearl to launch Akyn this May. Her former label has now closed and anyone who looks for it online is taken straight to the Akyn website that says “coming soon”.

We don’t know much about Akyn style-wise, apart from that it will be “crafting elevated, contemporary womenswear”.

It’s a big move as she’d been at Mother of Pearl for 19 years. But her new label looks set to continue the work she started when she converted Mother of Pearl into one of UK fashion’s most eco-focused brands.

Powney said Akyn will be “purpose-driven” and “grounded in elevated design and sustainability”. She added that wants to use her “voice and expertise on a wider scale, creating deeper impact and striving for continued and meaningful change within the industry”.

Mother of Pearl was founded by Maia Norman in 2002 and after joining in 2006 and working her way up in the business, Powney became both its creative chief and its minority co-owner, helping to edge it away from its original print-focused positioning and artist collabs to its more minimalist style and high-profile eco strategy.

Her work in this direction was the focus of the Fashion Reimagined documentary in 2023 that followed her push to make the label more sustainable.

“As creative director and partner of Akyn, Amy will be able to use her voice and expertise on a wider scale, creating deeper impact and striving for continued and meaningful change within the industry,” a statement released to announce the forthcoming launch said.

Newton appoints Schoenmakers global head of retail and consumer goods

Strategic delivery consultancy Newton, which works with a wide range of retailers, has appointed Wil Schoenmakers senior partner, becoming global head of Retail and Consumer Goods.

His hiring “complements… and expedites the expansion and growth of the company globally, positioning the business to capitalise on its competitive advantage when it comes to increasing its presence and offering across broader Europe and North America within the retail and consumer sector”.

Schoenmakers will be responsible for “expanding and evolving” the impact and value that Newton is able to offer clients in Europe and beyond, “helping them solve their most complex challenges”. 

He joins with “an extensive understanding of the challenges the sector faces, and experience in building solutions that address them”. He has led a large number of strategically significant projects for clients over many years”.

That’s via a 30-year track record in the global consumer sector, from Procter & Gamble as PA Consulting as a Partner and Global Head for Consumer, Retail and Manufacturing to leading Korn Ferry’s global consulting business for consumer, specialising in organisation and cultural transformation.

Newton MD Steve Phillips said: “His track record within the sector is exemplary and he is committed to spending significant time with clients on the ground to support their strategic delivery and ambitions.”

Schoenmakers added: “Newton already has a huge impact in the consumer goods and retail sector, with a potent mix of a strong culture, bright minds, deep sector insights, a true collaborative spirit and real impact offering huge potential globally.

The Estée Lauder Companies announced on Monday the appointment of Michael Bowes as executive vice president, chief people officer, becoming the first executive to hold the newly created title.

In this role, effective April 1, Bowes will oversee all aspects of global human resources, including talent management, career development, and organizational design. He will succeed Michael O’Hare, executive vice president and chief human resources officer, who is retiring. 

“Michael is a dynamic leader with a deep passion for people and culture,” said president and CEO Stéphane de La Faverie, who Bowes will report to.

“His strategic vision, commitment to talent development, and ability to foster collaboration across our global organization make him the ideal leader to shape the future of our workforce. Since joining Estée Lauder in 2015, Bowes has led global talent acquisition and talent management, including executive talent management, talent development, and enterprise learning and development. His leadership was instrumental in launching a new internal talent marketplace, employee listening surveys, and leadership development programs. Bowes is also recognized for championing diversity and inclusion efforts.

Prior to Estée Lauder, Bowes held senior HR and talent management roles at retail brands, including Coach, Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Cole Haan, and Saks Fifth Avenue. He was also managing director of executive search at Karen Harvey Consulting.
