The University of Tampa is now one victory away from becoming the first Division II program to win three consecutive national championships.
The Spartans defeated West Chester University 7-4 in 10 innings Thursday night at the USA Baseball National Training Complex, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three National Championship Series.
Extra-Inning Thriller Delivers Championship Drama
Tampa and West Chester were locked in a tight battle through nine innings before the Spartans broke through in the 10th. The game ended 7-4, with Tampa’s offense delivering when it mattered most.
The victory marks Tampa’s 50th win of the season (50-8 record) and extends their dominance in postseason play. West Chester fell short despite setting a program record with 47 wins this season.
Key Players Lead Tampa’s Championship Push
Brayden Woodburn continues to be Tampa’s offensive catalyst, having reached 200 career hits during the tournament. The senior contributed significantly with timely hitting throughout the championship series.
Jhoander Irigoyen (.378 batting average, 11 home runs, 65 RBIs) and Jordan Evans (.355 average, 8 home runs, 48 RBIs) provide the middle-of-the-order firepower that makes Tampa dangerous in clutch situations.
On the mound, Robert Satin (13-2, 2.41 ERA, 110 strikeouts) and B.J. Bailey (13-0, 1.96 ERA, 103 strikeouts) form one of Division II’s most dominant pitching duos, with both pitchers delivering in high-leverage moments.
West Chester’s Offensive Stars Fall Short
West Chester’s lineup featured several standout hitters, including Austin Slater (.347 average, 11 home runs, 60 RBIs), Caleb Strawhecker (.357 average, 8 home runs, 45 RBIs), and Hunter Smith (.347 average, 7 home runs, 57 RBIs).
Despite their offensive production, the Golden Rams couldn’t solve Tampa’s pitching in extras, falling 7-4 in the championship series opener.

Tampa enters Friday’s game aiming for their 11th overall national championship. The Spartans won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025, and a third straight would cement their status as the greatest Division II program of the modern era.
