Orange County government’s 15th annual holiday toy drive is open and taking presents to help families in need.
The holiday toy drive for babies up to teenagers has collected nearly 100,000 toys and gifts since it first began in 2011. Officials are hoping to keep making a big difference again this year.
“Each toy donated represents more than a gift; it’s a reminder that our community cares,” Mayor Jerry Demings said in a recent statement. “When we come together to give, we lift spirits and bring hope to families across Orange County.”
The donated items will go toward Orange County youth and family agencies, Wraparound Orange, Orange County Public Schools Kids’ Closet, and local nonprofit organizations, the county said.
Those interested in donating can shop online, attend an event or drop a toy off in person at a fire station, recreation center or other sites around the county.
By Dec. 1, individuals can buy a toy through the county’s online toy store. All items will be shipped to the holiday warehouse, saving donors the trouble.
From 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dec. 5, Fox35 Orlando is hosting a Shop-and-Drop event at the Walmart Supercenter located 1250 E. Colonial Dr. “Shop and take advantage of holiday savings. Meet your favorite on-air personalities and be part of this festive day of giving,” the county’s website said.
By Dec. 8, drop off a new, unwrapped toy in person at one of 30 designated locations on this map. “Please note that cash, gift cards, and plush toys are not accepted,” the county’s website said.
Orange County is home to 1.5 million people.
As the holidays gear up, some elected officials are already in a spirit of giving and helping those in need.
Last week Sen. Shevrin Jones and Rep. Ashley Gantt, two Miami-Dade Democrats, hosted a giveaway of 500 turkeys in a drive-thru food drive in South Florida. Other events will no doubt ramp up for the Thanksgiving holiday and as Christmas approaches.
