Former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann believes Mohamed Salah could end up in MLS as he is set to announce his new club imminently after confirming his departure from Anfield.
Salah, arguably Liverpool’s greatest ever Premier League player, will be leaving this summer after a remarkable nine-year stint with the club – in which he has scored 257 goals in 435 appearances.
During his time at Anfield, he has helped guide the Reds to two Premier League titles and the Champions League, having scored the opener in the final against Tottenham back in 2019. However, this season has been a disappointing one for Salah and he is now seeking pastures new.
Hamann, who played for Liverpool between 1999 and 2006, has said Salah is now ‘past his best’ and has named three potential destinations for him – including MLS.
Speaking to , Hamann said after a slight upturn in form this season: “First of all, it’s good that Mohamed Salah has scored those goals because it gives Liverpool a bit of breathing space now to sixth place and they should finish in the top five.
“I think a player like him always wants to prove that he’s the best. That’s why I was surprised at some of his comments where he said, ‘Oh, I’ve done so much for the club, why should I prove my worth every single day?’ No, you have to because it’s not what he’s done in the past, it’s what he’ll do now and in the future.
“He’s been in Italy. In Italy, you know, they like an older and experienced player, so I can see him ending up there. I can’t see him at any of the top clubs in Spain. I can’t really see him in Germany because they won’t be able to pay the wages.
“I’m not sure in the Premier League whether there are any takers. I think it’s no secret that he’s past his best. If you look at the last 18 months, he’s only scored a handful of goals from open play since the Christmas before last.
“So I’d be surprised if there are any takers in the Premier League. I think Saudi, MLS, or maybe Italy are the most likely destinations.”
Salah will be desperate to leave Liverpool on a high and guide them into the Champions League next season – with the Reds eyeing a third-place finish in the Premier League.
They’re fighting for that spot against arch rivals Manchester United, who they take on in a fascinating encounter this Sunday at Old Trafford. Salah will be eyeing a final goal or two against Liverpool’s old foes.
