Hurricanes Raise the Tempo as Preseason Scrimmage Delivers Energy
The Hurricanes returned to work Friday evening, but instead of their usual Greentree routine, the team headed north to Hard Rock Stadium for the first scrimmage of preseason camp. With the Sept. 4 opener at Stanford approaching, Miami used the night to test depth, physicality, and game‑speed execution. After the workout, head coach Mario Cristobal spoke with radio analyst Don Bailey Jr. and offered a detailed breakdown of what he saw from his team.
Cristobal Sees Competitive Energy and Physical Play
Cristobal described the scrimmage as a back‑and‑forth battle, exactly the type of competitive environment he wanted to see at this stage of camp. He noted explosive plays on both sides of the ball, followed by stretches where the defense responded with pressure and physical stops.
He emphasized that Miami pushed younger players and those who have not yet worked with the first unit into meaningful situations. The staff plans to evaluate film to determine who elevated their performance and who needs more development as camp continues.
Cristobal also highlighted that the team came out of the scrimmage relatively clean from an injury standpoint. He reminded players that physicality is non‑negotiable, stressing the importance of blocking, tackling, and practicing with full effort while still maintaining awareness to avoid unnecessary injuries.
Special Teams Earn Valuable Reps Under Pressure
One of the biggest wins of the night came on special teams. Cristobal said Miami logged more than 30 special teams plays, giving kickers and coverage units a chance to perform under pressure. The staff tested kickers from multiple distances and game‑specific situations, including red‑zone attempts and two‑minute drills.
Cristobal noted that the specialists responded well, delivering consistent execution in a variety of challenging scenarios. With special teams often determining close games, Miami’s focus on this phase early in camp signals a commitment to complete, disciplined football.
Miami Continues Building Toward Stanford
The Hurricanes will return to Greentree as camp resumes, but Friday’s scrimmage offered a meaningful checkpoint. Miami showed physicality, depth, and competitive fire — traits Cristobal wants to see sharpened as the opener draws closer.
