Buccaneers Add Two New Playmakers to Bolster Depth
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers continued their steady run of August roster adjustments by signing running back Barika Kpeenu and safety Robert McDaniel. The team also waived and injured safety Marcus Banks and running back Kadarius Calloway as competition tightens across multiple position groups. Tampa Bay wants fresh energy and proven production from players who can contribute immediately on special teams and push for rotational roles.
Kpeenu Arrives After a Breakout Season at North Dakota State
Barika Kpeenu brings championship experience and consistent production from his time at North Dakota State. He played 47 games from 2022 through 2025 and rushed 434 times for 2,283 yards and 32 touchdowns. He added 35 receptions for 369 yards and two scores, giving Tampa Bay a back with reliable hands and strong downhill acceleration.
Kpeenu delivered his best season in 2025, earning first‑team All‑Missouri Valley Football Conference honors and third‑team FCS All‑America recognition. He rushed for 1,005 yards and 20 touchdowns on 191 carries, ranking fourth in the FCS in rushing scores. His 20 touchdowns marked the highest total by a North Dakota State player since 2014. He also played a key role in the Bison’s 2024 FCS national championship run. The West Fargo native will wear No. 49 for Tampa Bay and enters camp with a chance to compete for early‑down carries and special teams snaps.
McDaniel Brings Versatility and Playmaking Ability to the Secondary
Safety Robert McDaniel arrives after spending his rookie season on the Washington Commanders practice squad. Washington signed him as a college free agent in May 2025, and he remained with the team until his release on August 11, 2026.
McDaniel played collegiately at Jackson State, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and Alcorn State. His final season at Jackson State in 2024 showcased his range and physicality. He recorded 55 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, five passes defensed, 4.5 sacks, three interceptions, and two forced fumbles while helping the Tigers win the SWAC Championship. He earned Phil Steele All‑SWAC honors and competed in the 2025 HBCU Legacy Bowl. The Jackson, Mississippi native will wear No. 39 for Tampa Bay.
