Gas prices see sharp drop in past 11 days as tensions with Iran ease

The AAA Auto Club notes that a steep fall in gas prices will help Floridians’ travel plans during a historic Independence Day holiday stretch.

As the Fourth of July holiday stretch is approaching, there’s some good news for Floridians who plan on traveling to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Gas prices are going down significantly in the Sunshine State in the wake of President Donald Trump’s announcement that an end to the war with Iran is nigh. The AAA Auto Club of Florida reports prices at the pump have plummeted about 32 cents per gallon on average in the past 11 days.

“Florida’s state average is now the lowest since early March,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesperson for AAA of Florida. “Lower gas prices come at an ideal time for summer travel and offer some financial relief for drivers. Still, the outlook remains uncertain. Developments involving the Strait of Hormuz will continue to influence whether prices rise or fall.”

The average price for a gallon of gas in Florida as of Monday was $3.61, significantly lower than the national average of about $3.93. Florida’s average price per gallon is higher, though, than the previous record set for the comparable point in June 2024, when it was $3.53. It’s also pricier than just a year ago, when an average gallon of gas was about $3.11.

The most expensive gas in the state is generally in South Florida, where West Palm Beach area gas stations are charging about $3.82 per gallon. Miami is pricing gas at $3.75, and Fort Lauderdale gas is going for $3.71.

Pensacola is charging the least amount for gas, at about $3.41 per gallon. The Space Coast was in a close second at $3.48, and Fort Walton Beach is charging just $3.50.

The dip in gas prices now is critical to easing travel expenses as AAA of Florida projected this month there would be a record number of people taking road trips this Independence Day travel season. AAA officials expect 4.65 million Floridians will be on the move during the Fourth of July stretch, with 4.08 million of those travelers using autos to get to their destinations.

If those numbers hold, they would break the record in Florida set last year, when 4.56 million were on the move.

AAA is forecasting that an estimated 72.2 million Americans will travel during the holiday stretch.
