Florida Chamber of Commerce poll shows most state voters are proud to be American

More Republicans say so than Democrats, however.

A statewide poll conducted by the Florida Chamber of Commerce shows most Floridians are proud to be Americans during this 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

The poll found 64% of Floridians say they are “very proud” to be American. Another 12% say they are “somewhat proud,” and the same amount indicate they are not proud at all.

“Two hundred and fifty years ago the Founding Fathers set America on a course that has shaped the world ever since,” said Mark Wilson, President and CEO of the Florida Chamber of Commerce. “As America celebrates this milestone anniversary, the Florida Chamber celebrates and takes pride in our nation, in Florida’s national leadership, and in the entrepreneurial spirit that defines America to this day.”

The Chamber poll found perceptions of American pride and levels of enthusiasm fall along partisan lines. Some 89% of Republicans surveyed say they are very proud Americans. Conversely, about 34% of Democrats say the same. Among no-party voters, 58% say they’re very proud to be U.S. citizens.

About 25% of Democrats say they’re not proud at all of being American. Among Republicans, that figure is only 2%, and 12% of no-party voters say the same.

Responses were also split significantly by age, as 71% of Floridians over the age of 60 say they’re very proud to be American. Just 42% of those under 40 say the same.

On their outlook on American history in general, 74% of Florida voters say Americans should be proud of the nation’s history. Only 12% say they feel ashamed.

There is also a wide partisan disparity on that question, with 91% of Republicans saying Americans should have pride in the country’s history while 51% of Democrats say the same. For no-party voters, 71% say the country is a source of pride for them.

The Florida Chamber survey tapped 604 likely voters across the state between May 1 and May 9.
