USMNT are hoping to stun the major countries during the World Cup knockout rounds
England lag behind USMNT when it comes to making hydration breaks count at the 2026 World Cup.
England have struggled to make the most of hydration breaks at the 2026 World Cup, while the United States have shown how the stoppages can be used to gain a tactical advantage.
Research from AceOdds has analysed every goal scored within 10 minutes of a hydration break during the group stage, revealing the difference between the two nations and compared to their rivals ahead of their round of 32 fixtures.
World Cup hydration breaks – Three Lions struggle
One of the biggest talking points of the tournament has been the introduction of mandatory hydration breaks, with managers now effectively receiving two tactical timeouts in every match. The brief stoppages have allowed coaches to tweak their tactics, change shape and deliver fresh instructions midway through each half.
However, Thomas Tuchel’s England have been unable to capitalise. The Three Lions failed to score a single goal within 10 minutes of a hydration break during the group stage, while conceding once in those same periods. That leaves England with a water-break goal difference of -1.
With England preparing to face DR Congo in the Round of 32, the data suggests the hydration breaks could be an area Tuchel’s side will need to improve if they are to progress deep into the tournament.
USMNT meanwhile, led by former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino, have shown greater efficiency after the breaks.
Pochettino’s side have scored once within 10 minutes of a hydration break and have not conceded during those periods, giving the Americans a positive goal difference and demonstrating their ability to make tactical adjustments pay off.
The findings come as USMNT prepare to face Bosnia & Herzegovina in the knockout stages, with their record suggesting they could once again look to use the breaks as an opportunity to seize momentum.
The wider study also found that hydration breaks have had a significant impact across the tournament, with several teams regularly scoring shortly after play resumes, highlighting how an innovation introduced for player welfare has quickly become an important tactical weapon.
