Donald Trump’s doctors give Neal Dunn ‘new lease on life’ after Congressman had months to live

President Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are revealing good news about the health of U.S. Rep. Neal Dunn, with the President divulging for the first time in public that without timely help, Dunn had just months to live.

The 73-year-old Dunn, who plans to retire at the end of the year, was in danger of being “dead by June,” according to the President, until his medical team stepped in.

“No. 1, it was bad ’cause I liked him. No. 2, it was bad ’cause I needed his votes. But he really said, he said, ‘Mike, I’m going to last this out for the President and you, and however long I live, I mean, it looks like June is the time, but however long I live, I’m going to be voting for you.’ I mean, how many people are going to say that? Most of them are going to say, ‘Mike, I’m retiring immediately. That’s the end,’” Trump related during a press conference in Washington, D.C.

Trump said White House doctors “immediately went over to see the Congressman, and he was on the operating table, like, two hours later.”

“And it was a long operation,” Trump added. “They gave him more stents and more everything that you could have. I think he’s got everything that you could possibly have. And they called up, they said, ‘Sure, I think he’ll be fine.’ I said, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ He said, ‘I think he’ll be fine.’”

Johnson said “it was incredible.”

“He has a new lease on life. He has more energy than a man half his age,” Johnson added. “So, again, a testament to great leadership. And he’s, my hat’s off to Neal Dunn, and his beautiful wife and family. He’s an extraordinary individual.”

Johnson had told donors in February that Dunn had a “terminal diagnosis.” While his Office has maintained Dunn will serve out his term, health concerns have dominated the discourse in recent weeks.

With Republicans clinging to a 218-214 majority with three current vacancies, the math of the map is a pressing concern for GOP leaders.

Yet Trump made it clear his concern was more with Dunn himself than it was with the political topography.

“And just, you know, because I don’t want to have a terrible story about this, I did it for him first and for the vote second. But it was a close second, actually. But I did it for the vote second, all right,” the President quipped.
