Carlos Guillermo Smith backs Gloria Reina O’Neal in Orange County School Board race

Sen. Carlos Guillermo Smith is endorsing Gloria Reina O’Neal for the Orange County School Board District 2 race.

“Gloria Reina understands that the job of a School Board member is to protect students, support educators, and strengthen public education — not to fuel divisive culture wars,” said Smith, an Orlando Democrat.

“I’m proud to endorse Gloria because she is committed to creating safe, welcoming schools where every student has the opportunity to succeed. She will be a strong voice for students, parents, teachers, and the future of public education in Orange County.”

O’Neal is up against Marisol Lugo in the Aug. 18 race to succeed incumbent School Board Member Maria Salamanca. Salamanca said she was unable to run for re-election because of her job. She has also endorsed O’Neal.

“I am incredibly grateful to have the support of Senator Carlos Guillermo Smith,” O’Neal said.

“Sen. Smith has always been a strong advocate for our community and for public education. I’m honored to have his trust and proud to stand alongside leaders who believe our schools should focus on supporting students, empowering educators, and preparing every child for success. Together, we can ensure Orange County students have the opportunities they deserve.”

The School Board race is nonpartisan, though partisan politics creeps into education routinely. Those include issues such as school choice and taxpayer-funded vouchers, deciding what books are allowed in libraries, parental rights, the use of artificial intelligence, and more.

Smith is the latest Democrat to endorse O’Neal, who has already picked up support from Rep. Rita Harris and former Sen. Victor Torres.

Orange County School Board Member Angie Gallo and the National Organization for Women Florida Chapter have also endorsed her.

Lugo has the backing of Alicia Farrant, the School Board’s most conservative member and a Moms for Liberty member. Farrant has eyes set on Orange County School Board Chair in a race against Gallo.
