Buccaneers ground out big win over Atlanta

Ugly, Wet, and Glorious: How Tampa Bay Took Control of the NFC South

For SportsTalk Florida readers who love physical, throwback football, Sunday’s 16-0 shutout against the Atlanta Falcons was pure art. Weather conditions were brutal in Tampa, but the Buccaneers adapted by leaning on their defense and run game for the second straight week—earning first place in the NFC South.

The box score looks like something from 1935: Baker Mayfield completed zero passes. Yet, the final score reflects complete dominance.

A Ground Game for the Ages: 324 Rushing Yards

When passing becomes a liability, elite teams rely on their offensive line. Tampa Bay’s front five physically pushed Atlanta’s defensive line backwards for four full quarters. Bucky Irving looked dynamic, cutting through wet turf for 170 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Kenneth Gainwell added 140 yards on the ground, keeping the offense moving continuously.

The Buccaneers held the ball for over 35 minutes of game time. By controlling the clock, Tampa Bay kept Michael Penix Jr. and the Falcons offense cold on the sideline.

Defensive Dominance Takes Center Stage

When the Falcons did drop back to pass, Tampa Bay’s secondary took over. Alex Anzalone snared two interceptions, while Jacob Parrish and Zyon McCollum added picks of their own. The defensive front kept Atlanta running back Bijan Robinson in check, forcing Atlanta into obvious passing situations where Tampa Bay’s ballhawks could strike.

Chase McLaughlin’s three field goals were more than enough padding for a defense that refused to yield an inch of red zone territory. With two consecutive performances showing elite defensive effort and rushing power, the Buccaneers enter the second half of the season with major momentum.
