Baylor coaching job is of interest to RGIII

Leadership Transition at Baylor Football Program

Baylor first year defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman has stepped into the interim head coach position following the Sunday dismissal of Dave Aranda. The university parted ways with Aranda after six and a half seasons that yielded an overall record of forty wins and forty losses. Speaking on Monday, Klanderman expressed his desire to provide an immediate spark of enthusiasm for the players, coaching staff, alumni, and fan base during a critical stretch of the season.

The program currently holds a record of four wins and three losses overall, with two wins and two losses in Big Twelve Conference play. Since achieving a school record twelve wins, a Big Twelve championship, and a Sugar Bowl victory during Aranda second season in 2021, the Bears have struggled to maintain momentum, posting a record of twenty six wins and thirty one losses. Recent late game stumbles against Kansas and TCU highlighted the need for a shift in leadership.

Former Heisman Trophy Winner Expresses Interest

In the wake of the coaching change, former Baylor star quarterback Robert Griffin III publicly stated his desire to be considered for the permanent head coaching job. During a Monday appearance on The Dan Patrick Show, the 2011 Heisman Trophy winner confirmed that he had communicated with athletic director Doug McNamee regarding the position. Despite lacking prior coaching experience, the thirty six year old sports broadcaster emphasized his personal understanding of what it takes to achieve success within the program.

Griffin led the team to a ten win season in 2011, throwing for over four thousand yards and accounting for forty seven total touchdowns. That campaign marked the first ten win season for the program since 1980. Following his collegiate success, the second overall draft choice played seven seasons in the National Football League before transitioning to his current role as a college football analyst.

Search Process and Interim Strategy

Baylor athletic director Doug McNamee outlined the roadmap for finding the next permanent head coach in an open letter released on Monday. The university has initiated the search process, though the timing of the college football calendar suggests an official hire will likely occur in December. McNamee highlighted the importance of securing a leader who can establish consistent success while supporting the mission and values of the institution.

For his part, the forty seven year old Klanderman brings extensive coaching experience from previous successful stints at Kansas State, North Dakota State, and Minnesota State. While acknowledging that leading a premier program in Texas would be an exciting opportunity, Klanderman stressed that his primary focus remains on preparing the current squad for the remaining five regular season games rather than actively campaigning for the permanent role.

Challenging Road Ahead for the Bears

The immediate focus for the program shifts to a demanding regular season schedule that resumes on a short week with a Friday night matchup at Central Florida. The opponents recently secured a double overtime victory against a highly ranked Brigham Young team, presenting a formidable test for the interim head coach in his debut appearance.

The November stretch offers little relief, beginning with a contest against Iowa State before concluding with three consecutive matchups against ranked opponents. The Bears face Iowa State, Brigham Young, Texas Tech, and Houston to close out the regular season. Klanderman emphasized that despite recent setbacks, all preseason goals remain attainable as the team looks to move forward under new direction.
