Another poll shows Marco Rubio, Ron DeSantis staring up at JD Vance in 2028 GOP sweepstakes, each struggling with young voters

Surveys continue to show Vice President JD Vance as Republicans’ top choice in the next presidential election, but that it’s still too early to count Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Gov. Ron DeSantis out.

A YouGov poll conducted from April 8-13 shows Vance with 36% support, ahead of Rubio’s 13%, Donald Trump Jr.‘s 13%, and DeSantis’ 6%.

Rubio and DeSantis do much worse with voters under the age of 30 than with the overall pool of respondents.

Just 1% of them back Rubio, while 3% support DeSantis.

Rubio’s strongest with senior citizens, with 20% backing him, but he’s in the mid-teens with every other age group.

DeSantis is best with people between 45-64 years of age, drawing 8% support.

In what could be interpreted as a rejection of his fight against illegal immigration that led to spectacles like flying migrants to Martha’s Vineyard and deploying state funds for Alligator Alcatraz without locking down federal reimbursement, DeSantis also struggles with Hispanic respondents.

His 3% support is half that of former Vice President Mike Pence.

DeSantis does over-perform in the Midwest, with 10% support. He marginally leads Rubio, at 9%, in the region.

With just months left in his term, DeSantis continues to elicit questions about his next move. As he said last month, he’s not making any firm commitments to run or stay out of the fray.

“Doing things nationally, all this other stuff; you know, who knows? Things change so fast in this day and age. Two months ago seems like a lifetime ago. Think of all the new things we’re talking about right now with what’s going on in the world and everything just in the last two months. And so who knows how all this stuff evolves?”

Rubio continues to field questions about running as well, and indications are that Vance or he might be the President’s preference to succeed him. But nothing is set in stone this far out.
