Lightning opens with a loss to New York

The Tampa Bay Lightning will look for a fast response Saturday night after the New York Rangers sent them into the home opener with a 5-1 opening-night loss at Madison Square Garden.

New York controlled the game and finished with a historic flourish. Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin became the first goalie in franchise history to score a goal when he lofted the puck into Tampa Bay’s empty net late in the third period. The goal capped a five-goal Rangers performance and left the Lightning searching for answers after their first game of the 2026-27 season.

Lightning Must Reset After Opening-Night Frustration

Tampa Bay entered the opener with confidence after closing the preseason with a 3-2 shootout victory over the Florida Panthers. The Rangers quickly changed that tone, forcing the Lightning to chase the game and making the Bolts pay for breakdowns at both ends of the ice.

The Lightning now need a cleaner performance in front of their home fans. Tampa Bay must improve its puck management through the neutral zone, limit turnovers at the offensive blue line and create more sustained pressure around the opposing net.

Andrei Vasilevskiy started in goal against the Rangers and remains the centerpiece of Tampa Bay’s response. The Lightning’s two-time Stanley Cup champion has repeatedly shown he can rebound after difficult nights, but the skaters in front of him need to make the home opener less about goaltending survival and more about playing with structure.

Capitals Bring a Quick Road Test to Tampa

Washington opens its own season Friday night at Carolina before traveling to Tampa on Saturday. That schedule gives the Capitals a back-to-back opening weekend, while the Lightning will have one day to study their loss in New York and prepare for a divisional rival with a difficult road sequence.

The early goaltending matchup could define the night. Charlie Lindgren is expected to start for Washington, while Vasilevskiy projects as Tampa Bay’s likely starter after he faced the Rangers on opening night.

Washington must manage its energy after the Carolina game, but the Capitals can also bring sharpness from playing meaningful hockey the previous night. Tampa Bay’s job is to use its home crowd, dictate the tempo and force Washington to defend for long stretches.

Tampa Bay’s Stars Need to Drive the Response

The Lightning’s leadership group must set the tone after a lopsided defeat. Tampa Bay needs its veteran core to establish puck possession, win special-teams situations and create traffic around Lindgren.

The Bolts cannot allow one difficult road loss to become a trend. The home opener offers an immediate opportunity to reset the standard, regain momentum and give fans a winning start at Benchmark International Arena.

Keys to the Game

Tampa Bay needs to control the first 10 minutes. An energetic home crowd can help, but the Lightning must turn that energy into clean exits, sustained offensive-zone shifts and better defensive coverage.

The special teams battle also carries extra weight. A power-play goal could quickly change the mood after Thursday’s loss, while a penalty-killing lapse could hand Washington confidence during the second half of a back-to-back.

Vasilevskiy’s bounce-back performance remains the biggest storyline. If he delivers a composed, high-volume outing and the Lightning provide enough offensive support, Tampa Bay can erase the sting of New York and launch its home schedule with a critical victory.

Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Saturday at Benchmark International Arena. ESPN+ will stream the game nationally.
