USF opens the season with FIU

USF Opens 2026 Season at Raymond James Stadium

Florida opens its 2026 home slate on Saturday, September 5, with USF hosting FIU at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM EDT on ESPN+. The matchup marks the beginning of South Florida’s final season in the stadium before transitioning to its long‑planned on‑campus venue. It also represents the official debut of head coach Brian Hartline, hired nine months ago to lead the Bulls into a new era.

FIU Outlook

FIU arrives in Tampa looking to build on a 7‑6 campaign from 2025 under head coach Willie Simmons. The Panthers feature transfer quarterback JJ Kohl, a towering 6‑foot‑7 passer who threw for 1,465 yards and 12 touchdowns last season. Kohl’s size and pocket presence give FIU a clear identity on offense, and Simmons’ system aims to maximize his ability to stand tall, read the field and deliver accurate throws.

The Panthers averaged 397 yards per game last season and will attempt to test USF’s rebuilt defense early. FIU’s challenge will be handling the Bulls’ aggression at the line of scrimmage and maintaining rhythm against a defense determined to disrupt Kohl’s timing.

USF Outlook

For USF, Saturday is more than a season opener — it is the start of a new chapter. Hartline enters his first game as head coach without nerves, leaning on preparation and trust in his staff. His confidence will be tested immediately against a capable FIU offense.

Defensively, senior end Michael Williams II leads a unit adopting the aggressive philosophy of new coordinator Josh Aldridge. Williams and his teammates aim to replicate Aldridge’s success at East Carolina, where ECU allowed just 20.1 points per game and averaged 2.5 sacks. Their mission begins with controlling the line of scrimmage and making life difficult for Kohl.

Offensively, USF’s identity is forming behind a rebuilt line anchored by guard Caleb Cook. With former center Cole Best departing for Auburn, Cook emphasizes discipline and physicality as the foundation of the Bulls’ attack. He believes negative plays stem from lapses in focus, and eliminating them is key to keeping the quarterback clean and establishing a productive run game. Cook expects USF to lean heavily on a physical rushing approach to set the tone.

What to Watch

The matchup hinges on trench play. USF’s defensive front wants to collapse the pocket and force Kohl into uncomfortable situations, while FIU hopes its tempo and passing rhythm can neutralize pressure. On offense, the Bulls aim to establish the run early and build confidence for Hartline’s debut.

Saturday night will reveal whether USF’s new era — built on discipline, aggression and physicality — can translate immediately into results. The Bulls begin that journey under the lights at Raymond James Stadium.
