The University of Tampa continued its dominant postseason march with a 2–1 victory over Point Loma at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The win pushed the Spartans to 48–8 and kept them unbeaten in the 2026 NCAA Division II National Championship Series. They now sit one victory away from returning to the national championship finals and pursuing a record third straight title.
A Tight Pitching Battle Defines the Night
Both teams entered with elite pitching staffs, and the game unfolded exactly that way. Tampa struck first in the second inning when Jake Books doubled and later scored on a two‑out RBI single from Luke Fikar. The early lead held behind strong pitching and steady defense.
Point Loma created pressure throughout the middle innings, leaving runners stranded in the second, fifth and seventh. Tampa starter B.J. Bailey delivered key outs, and Fikar entered in relief to escape a bases‑loaded jam in the seventh.
Spartans Respond After Point Loma Ties the Game
Point Loma tied the game in the eighth after a single and a Tampa fielding error. The Spartans answered immediately in the ninth. Jack Martinez reached on an error and moved into scoring position. With two outs, Brayden Woodburn delivered a sharp RBI single to center, scoring Martinez for the decisive run. Fikar closed the ninth to secure the win.
Tampa’s Pitching Staff Continues Its Postseason Dominance
Bailey worked 6.2 scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out three. Fikar earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, giving up only an unearned run and striking out three. Tampa’s pitching depth once again set the tone, keeping the Spartans perfect in postseason play.
Key Performers Lead the Way
Brayden Woodburn finished 3‑for‑5 with the game‑winning RBI. Books added two hits, a double and a run scored. Jordan Evans posted a multi‑hit night, and Fikar contributed both on the mound and at the plate. Tampa’s lineup produced timely offense while maintaining pressure throughout the game.
Spartans Continue Building on a Historic Legacy
Tampa improved to 9–0 in NCAA Tournament play this postseason. The program already owns an NCAA‑record 10 national championships and entered the 2026 tournament with a 164–69 all‑time postseason record. Another deep run strengthens one of the most successful legacies in Division II baseball history.
