What’s next for the USMNT at the World Cup?

Despite a 3-2 loss to Turkey on Thursday night, the U.S. Men’s National Team moves on to the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Americans will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California (8 p.m. ET, FOX, Telemundo).

Bosnia and Herzegovina finished in third place in Group B and advanced with 4 points. The Bosnians are ranked No. 62 in the FIFA World Rankings. The United States is ranked 15th.

After a comprehensive 4-1 win over Paraguay to open the tournament, the United States shut out Australia in the second match, 2-0. Against Turkey, head coach Mauricio Pochettino made nine changes to the starting lineup. In the opening minutes of the match, it appeared that the USMNT would run away with it after a goal by Auston Trusty in the third minute. It was the first international goal for Trusty and the second-fastest goal in a World Cup for the United States.

But Turkey didn’t lie down. Instead, the Turks scored a pair of goals to take the lead before Sebastian Berhalter equalized for the USMNT. Once Christian Pulisic came on as a sub in the 58th minute, the U.S. looked more dangerous in the run of play, but they couldn’t find another goal. Turkey scored in the final moments of the match to win 3-2.

Because of all of the changes, fans shouldn’t put too much emphasis on the final group stage match for Pochettino’s squad. Several regular starters were not used in the game for the United States. While Pulisic came on as a second-half substitute, Tyler Adams, Folarin Balogun, Tim Ream, Chris Richards, Antonee Robinson and Matt Freese were among the regular starters who sat on Thursday.

Pulisic, Alex Freeman, Sergiño Dest and Malik Tillman played less than 40 minutes as subs. Alejandro Zendejas also made his World Cup debut as a late sub.

If the United States beats Bosnia and Herzegovina, they will face the winner of Group G or a third-place finisher from Group A, E, H, I or J in the Round of 16. Egypt faces Iran Friday night (11 p.m. ET, FS1). If the Egyptians win, they will win the group and could be an eventual opponent for the USMNT.

Other games to watch Friday:

— Norway faces France for the top spot in Group I (3 p.m. ET, FOX, Telemundo). The match features two of the biggest superstars in the game: Norway’s Erling Haaland and France’s Kylian Mbappe. Making his World Cup debut, Haaland has scored a pair of goals in each of the first two games in the group, helping Norway to wins over Iraq and Senegal. Mbappe has also scored four goals in the first two games. Both are chasing Lionel Messi for the Golden Boot in the tournament. Messi has five goals in two matches.

— Senegal faces Iraq at the same time. Neither side has managed a point in the tournament.

— Cape Verde plays Saudi Arabia tonight (8 p.m. ET, FS1). Cape Verde, playing in the first World Cup in the nation’s history, has managed a pair of draws in the tournament, including a remarkable result against Spain. With another draw, Cape Verde could earn a spot in the knockout round. A win would certainly put them through.

— Spain can win Group H with a victory over Uruguay (8 p.m. ET, FOX, Telemundo).

— New Zealand faces Belgium (11 p.m. ET, FOX). Neither side has won a match so far. If Belgium wins, they will advance, although they could go through with a draw. New Zealand needs a win to keep their tournament hopes alive.
