South Florida’s rise from conference afterthought to championship program has changed the national perception of what the USF Bulls can be. That became clear the moment Bryan Hodgson accepted the Providence job, officially opening one of the most attractive positions in college basketball.

USF CEO of Athletics Rob Higgins made it clear that the demand is unlike anything the school has seen.
Higgins said there has already been “unprecedented” interest in the opening. He added, “I am naturally biased, but we believe the short- and long-term opportunity of leading our men’s basketball program is second to none. The interest associated with this position has already been unprecedented in advance of it officially opening, which speaks to how far our program has come in recent seasons, how well it’s competitively resourced, and where we’re going.”
That kind of statement doesn’t just set expectations — it signals that USF is aiming high.
Early Candidates Begin to Emerge
While the search is still in its early stages, several names have surfaced nationally and regionally as logical fits for a program that just won both the AAC regular‑season and tournament titles.
Takayo Siddle – UNC Wilmington Head Coach
USF came close to hiring him last year. Siddle was heavily pursued during the South Florida search after leading UNC Wilmington to the NCAA Tournament last year and pushing Texas Tech to the brink in the first round
Earlier this month he signed a new five year contract extension but there are plenty of outs in the deal. So he is still in play for USF
Siddle has built UNCW into a consistent winner, posting multiple 20‑plus win seasons and earning a reputation as one of the sharpest young coaches in the mid‑major ranks. His modern offensive approach and player‑development track record make him a natural candidate.
Tony Skinn – George Mason Head Coach
Skinn led George Mason to one of its best seasons in over a decade, energizing the program with DMV recruiting ties and a fast, physical style. His A‑10 success has put him on several national shortlists.
Ryan Pannone – Alabama Assistant, USF Alum
A Clearwater native and USF graduate, Pannone brings NBA and G‑League experience along with a strong reputation for X‑and‑O innovation. His connection to the program makes him a name to watch.
Other Potential Names
Former high‑major head coaches such as Tom Crean or Steve Wojciechowski could also surface if USF leans toward experience. The Bulls’ resources, roster foundation, and trajectory make the job appealing to a wide range of candidates.
What Comes Next
USF is expected to move quickly but deliberately. With a returning core capable of contending again, the Bulls are positioned to attract a coach who can sustain — and elevate — the standard Hodgson set in just one season.
The message from Higgins is unmistakable: this is no longer a rebuilding job. It’s a destination.
