The United States Golf Association presents the 126th U.S. Open Championship, set for June 18–21 at historic Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. With these additions, the number of fully exempt players rises to 88, and the final alternates have been added to complete the 156‑player field.
J.T. Poston secured his exemption through the Official World Golf Ranking after a dramatic surge to No. 38, powered by his victory at The Memorial Tournament. Poston played 33 holes on a weather‑delayed Sunday, then faced the prospect of 36 more during Final Qualifying the next day. The 33‑year‑old will make his seventh U.S. Open start, highlighted by a T‑32 at Pinehurst in 2024.
Bud Cauley also earned his place via the OWGR, climbing to No. 40 after winning the RBC Canadian Open—his first PGA Tour victory. The 36‑year‑old returns to the U.S. Open for the fourth time, with his best finish a T‑63 in 2011 at Congressional shortly after turning professional.
The USGA had reserved seven spots for players who could become exempt. With two earning exemptions, five alternates were added: Hennie Du Plessis, Spencer Tibbits, Bryan Lee, Jack Schoenberger, and Harry Higgs.
Preston Stout earned a full exemption on June 1 by winning the NCAA Division I Championship. Chandler Phillips entered the field as the first alternate from the Dallas qualifier after Marco Penge withdrew on June 9.
Shinnecock Hills: A Championship Venue Across Three Centuries
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club remains one of the most iconic venues in American golf and the only club to host the U.S. Open in three different centuries. Past champions at Shinnecock include James Foulis (1896), Raymond Floyd (1986), Corey Pavin (1995), Retief Goosen (2004), and Brooks Koepka (2018). The 2025 return adds another chapter to one of the USGA’s most historic partnerships.
