Tommy Schwarz is launching a bid for the Bradenton City Council’s Ward 3 seat, positioning himself as a grassroots candidate in the first contested election for the ward since 2018.
Schwarz, who has lived in Bradenton for more than two decades, is challenging incumbent Kemp Schuessler, who was appointed to the seat by the Bradenton City Council in 2025 after former Council member Josh Cramer vacated the position to accept a role as Bradenton’s Police Chief.
“After years without a choice, Ward 3 voters take back their voice in 2026,” Schwarz said in his campaign announcement.
“For too long, residents and small business owners in Ward 3 have felt unheard, and have been underrepresented in their local government. This campaign is about bringing people together, strengthening ties to our city, and making sure decisions reflect the needs of the entire Ward.”
According to his campaign website, Schwarz has called Bradenton home for 22 years, growing up in the city and graduating with honors from Manatee High School. He later earned an Associate of Arts degree from State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, and a bachelor’s degree in professional and technical communication, with a minor in sociology, from the University of South Florida.
Schwarz, who formally announced his candidacy Tuesday, works in the hospitality industry and said that experience has shaped his approach to public service, emphasizing problem-solving, active listening and transparency. His campaign also highlights more than 500 hours of volunteer service throughout Manatee County.
He prioritizes support for small businesses, increased community engagement in local government, backing for local arts and culture, transparent and accountable governance, responsible and sustainable growth, and preserving Ward 3’s historic character while planning for future development, according to his website.
“Our ward is strongest when we work together,” Schwarz said. “I’m running to ensure Ward 3 has leadership that is present, accessible, and committed to solutions that address their needs.”
Ward 3 is one of five districts represented on the Bradenton City Council. Schwarz, who filed his candidacy paperwork on Feb. 4, said he has already begun meeting with small-business owners and hosting community roundtables. He is next scheduled to attend “Chamber Day with the Pirates” at LECOM Park on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., where he plans to meet with residents and business leaders.
