Universal Orlando is going all out for Wicked.
The theme park announced it is opening a new themed store with film costume replicas, photo opportunities and special merch as part of a limited experience surrounding the upcoming release of “Wicked: For Good.”
Universal Studios’ Wicked: The Experience will open starting Halloween as part of regular ticket admission.
“Guests will journey beyond the yellow brick road and explore immersive spaces inspired by iconic locations like Shiz University and the Emerald City, now brought to life with new dazzling scenic design, and exclusive displays of costumes and props from the new film,” Universal said in a press release.
“Whether guests are ‘perfectly pink’ or ‘positively emerald,’ they will be able to shop exclusive new merch inspired by Wicked: For Good. This ozmopolitan new collection celebrates the Land of Oz and fan-favorite characters from the epic conclusion and features everything from home goods and plush to bag charms, accessories and apparel.”
Universal will also sell Wicked-theme treats outside Wicked: The Experience.
The press release did not say how long the experience will last.
“Wicked: For Good” is scheduled to be released Nov. 21.
Wicked has been a massive hit for Comcast Corp., which owns movie studios in addition to its theme parks division. The 2024 film grossed more than $750 million to become the top-grossing film ever based on a Broadway musical.
Could Universal ever capitalize on the two-part movie and build a full land? After all, many of the parks’ lands are based on films, such as “How to Train Your Dragon” or “Shrek.”
Mark Woodbury, Chair and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences, acknowledged the possibility of bringing Wicked — the retelling of “the Wizard of Oz” — into real life.
“When I saw it, my first reaction was, ‘This is a theme park waiting to happen,’” Woodbury said after he saw the movie, according to The New York Times.
