This marks only the fifth Western Conference Finals Game 7 of the century, joining 2018, 2016, 2002, and 2000. It is also the first time since 2018 that the league’s current MVP enters a Conference Finals Game 7.
History On The Line For Both Teams
Oklahoma City is aiming to become the first team since Golden State in 2018‑2019 to reach consecutive NBA Finals and the first since the 2017‑2018 Warriors to win back‑to‑back championships. Gilgeous‑Alexander could also become the first player since Stephen Curry in 2015‑2016 to win consecutive MVP awards while making consecutive Finals appearances.
San Antonio seeks its first Finals berth since 2014 and the franchise’s seventh overall. Wembanyama and Gilgeous‑Alexander have met in elimination games before, including the 2024 Paris Olympic quarterfinals, where Wembanyama’s France defeated Gilgeous‑Alexander’s Canada 82‑73 on the way to a silver medal.

San Antonio extended the series Thursday with a 118‑91 win in Game 6. Wembanyama delivered 28 points and 10 rebounds, while the Spurs’ young backcourt shined. Rookie Dylan Harper scored 18, 2025 Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle added 16, and Devin Vassell chipped in 12.
Harper joined elite company, becoming one of only five rookies in NBA history to record at least 200 points, 70 rebounds, 50 assists, and 20 steals in a single postseason. The list includes Jayson Tatum, Manu Ginobili, Magic Johnson, and Alvan Adams.
