South Florida looks at winning the American

American Conference

USF Steps Into a Loaded American Conference Race

South Florida enters the 2026 American Conference season facing one of the most competitive landscapes in college football. The Bulls, led by new head coach Brian Hartline, join a league stacked with fresh leadership, proven quarterbacks, and programs chasing postseason glory. The American’s depth and national reach continue to grow, with five head coaches beginning their first full seasons and three teams earning preseason poll recognition.

Memphis Headlines Early Season Honors

Memphis head coach Charles Huff made history in Week 0, becoming the first Tiger coach to win his debut on the road with a 27‑21 victory over UNLV. Huff’s comeback win earned him the Bear Bryant National Coach of the Week honor, while defensive lineman J’Mond Tapp was named the Shriners Children’s East‑West Bowl Defensive Player of the Week after recording five tackles and a sack. The Tigers, Navy, and Tulane all received votes in the 2026 Associated Press and AFCA coaches’ preseason polls, signaling the American’s growing national respect.

Coaching Turnover and Rising Programs

Five programs — Memphis, South Florida, UAB, North Texas, and Tulane — feature head coaches in their first full seasons. The American continues to produce postseason success, with nine teams reaching bowl games last year and five earning victories, trailing only the Big Ten and ACC. The conference also remains the only league to notch non‑conference wins over Big 12, Big Ten, SEC, and ACC opponents in 2025.

Quarterbacks Define the 2026 Race

Returning starters include Army’s Case Hellums, Florida Atlantic’s Caden Veltkamp, UTSA’s Owen McCown, and Tulsa’s Baylor Hayes. Veltkamp led the nation in completions per game last season, while McCown threw 30 touchdowns for UTSA. Hayes set freshman records at Tulsa and looks to build on his breakout campaign. Their experience gives the American a strong offensive foundation heading into marquee Week 1 matchups against Alabama and defending national champion Indiana.

Tradition, Rivalries, and New Initiatives

Tulane continues its championship streak, reaching four straight title games and winning two. The American Tailgate Tour debuts this fall, bringing fan activations to Temple, South Florida, and Florida Atlantic. The conference also partnered with the Shawn Clark Legacy Foundation’s 61 Initiative to promote coach wellness across all programs.

USF’s Role in the 2026 Storyline

South Florida kicker Nico Gramatica, son of former NFL kicker Martin Gramatica, returns after earning second‑team All‑Conference honors in 2025. His leg and Hartline’s leadership position the Bulls as a team capable of shaking up the standings. With Memphis surging, Navy chasing another Commander in Chief’s Trophy, and Tulane defending its crown, USF’s climb into contention could define the American’s next chapter.
