A live-in girlfriend of U.S. Rep. Cory Mills said political opponents have mischaracterized and exploited a private domestic incident.
“It has now been almost a full year since that moment, and I want to finally explain the details myself rather than allow others or the media to manipulate facts,” posted Sarah Raviani, an Iranian American political organizer, in a lengthy X post. “I have not directly publicly addressed the rumors or allegations until now, despite repeatedly stating to the media that the call stemmed from a personal matter after a long overseas flight.”
The call she referenced was in February to the Metropolitan Police in Washington. According to a police report provided to Florida Politics, Raviani responded to a call at 1:15 a.m. on Feb. 19 alleging an assault. Police ultimately referred the case to the U.S. Attorney’s Office and no charges were pursued after Raviani withdrew accusations.
Now Raviani wants to “address the renewed political misuse” of her initial call. U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, on Wednesday called for Mills to be censured and stripped of Committee assignments, and cited the phone call in remarks on the floor. But Raviani said she never pursued professional punishment against Mills.
“First and foremost: I am not a victim of anyone or anything. What is harming me now is Congresswoman Nancy Mace attempting to use my private life as a pawn for political gain – without my permission, without my consent, and without any regard for my wellbeing,” Raviani wrote.
Previous social media posts showed that the initial incident occurred after a Valentine’s Day trip to Dubai by Mills and Raviani.
“My significant other and I did have several drinks during the 14-hour trip, and by the time we landed, I was extremely jet-lagged, overwhelmed, and intoxicated,” Raviani said. “We continued drinking later that evening in Washington, D.C., which only exacerbated my poor state of mind and decision-making.”
She discussed marks and bruises reported by police in an incident report, but said Mills did not cause those.
“The marks referenced in the report were from ordinary travel-related activities as well as pre-existing, benign medical factors that had absolutely nothing to do with any wrongdoing,” she wrote. “Any attempt to twist these details into something more is simply false.”
She also addressed other allegations from Mace.
“As for the alleged ‘phone recording’ claiming I was instructed to lie — that event never occurred. What is happening now is a poor attempt by Nancy Mace to manufacture a narrative that simply does not exist,” Raviani wrote.
“Weaponizing women, weaponizing victimhood, and dragging my name into political theater helps no one, least of all me. I ask that my privacy be respected and that my own words, not someone else’s agenda, be taken as the final and accurate account of what occurred.”
The House Ethics Committee has expanded an investigation of Mills to include, among other allegations, “dating violence.”
