Daniels Shines in Preseason Opener
Jalon Daniels stole the spotlight Friday night as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened their preseason with a 24‑16 win over the New York Jets. It was only the first exhibition game, but several young players made meaningful impressions — none more than Daniels, who looked noticeably more comfortable and decisive than he had earlier in camp.
Preseason snaps matter, especially for players fighting for roster spots. Daniels used his opportunity to show growth, command, and poise in the pocket, delivering well‑placed throws and keeping the offense moving.
Daniels Outplays Bazelak
Connor Bazelak started the game and completed 12 of 20 passes for 72 yards, averaging fewer than four yards per attempt. His longest completion — a 19‑yard strike to Dennis Houston — was one of the few bright moments in a sluggish offensive start. Tampa Bay struggled to generate rhythm with Bazelak under center.
Daniels changed the tone immediately after taking over. He completed 10 of 15 passes for 111 yards, added three carries for nine yards, and scored a rushing touchdown. More importantly, the offense found the end zone with Daniels directing it, showing improved timing and confidence.
Head coach Todd Bowles praised Daniels’ composure and decision‑making, noting how relaxed he looked in the pocket and how effectively he trusted the system.
“He took what they gave him,” Bowles said. “He didn’t try to get out of there too fast and he was calm under pressure, and he let the system work for him as opposed to just trying to make a play.”
Daniels echoed that sentiment, explaining how his development has progressed since arriving in Tampa Bay and how he has worked to break old habits from college.
Should the Buccaneers Elevate Daniels to QB3?
Based on Friday night’s performance, Tampa Bay should seriously consider moving Daniels up to QB3. While it is only one preseason game, Daniels currently looks like the stronger option compared with Bazelak.
Jake Browning’s back injury adds another layer to the situation. If Browning cannot return soon, Daniels’ path up the depth chart becomes even more compelling. Baker Mayfield remains the clear starter, but behind him, Daniels is making the most convincing case.
Daniels’ Competitive Edge
Daniels spent six years at Kansas, where he built a reputation as a tough, committed leader. He played through injuries, represented the program with class, and consistently competed at a high level.
Now, he is getting his chance with the Buccaneers. His performance against the Jets showed why Tampa Bay should give him more opportunities. One preseason game does not define his future, but it certainly strengthened his argument for a larger role.
Final Thoughts
Daniels’ growth, poise, and confidence stood out in Tampa Bay’s preseason opener. If he continues trending upward, the Buccaneers may have a legitimate quarterback decision to make behind Mayfield — and Daniels is doing everything he can to earn that spot.
