The victory marks a first ranking final appearance in over two years for ‘The Rocket.‘
Ronnie O’Sullivan had to draw on every inch of his talent as he edged a nail-biting semi-final 6–5 against World No. 11 Wu Yize at the World Open in Yushan, China.
Although never trailing in the match, O’Sullivan was under constant pressure, and it looked to have taken its toll in the final-frame decider.
Wu opened up a healthy lead with a break of 43, but ‘The Rocket’ took full advantage of a poor safety shot by drilling in a long red before producing a composed 89 clearance under pressure.
O’Sullivan has chance to extend record after historic week
Few would have believed that, after winning the 2024 World Grand Prix, O’Sullivan would have to wait more than two years to reach another ranking final.
But he has finally rediscovered the consistency needed to reach a showpiece event, a turn in form that comes at just the right time ahead of the World Championship.
It comes at the end of a brilliant week for the Englishman, in which he created more snooker history by recording the highest-ever maximum break in his 5–0 quarter-final win over Ryan Day.
He now has the chance to extend his record tally of ranking titles on Sunday, having already won 41 in his previous 65 appearances.
O’Sullivan will face the winner of the second semi-final between Judd Trump and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.
