Could the President of the United States have solved one of the world’s toughest geopolitical puzzles?
Though he’s been skeptical of previous proposals, Gov. Ron DeSantis is optimistic that the latest plan might stick.
Addressing the proposed accord between Israel and Hamas struck just over two years after the terror attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, the Florida Governor told Fox News viewers that President Donald Trump’s strength may have subdued forces long hostile to the U.S. ally.
“The proof will be in the pudding. Trust but verify. But if this deal sticks, that’s going to be something that really has never been able to be done in many, many decades of trying to do this,” DeSantis told friendly interviewer Jesse Watters.
“I think one of the key elements is those Middle Eastern countries respect the strength of President Trump. They know that he is decisive, as you saw, with the Iran strikes. In that region, they want to be on the side of the strong horse.”
Watters could only listen as DeSantis diagnosed the problems in the region.
“I think that the one thing that I can tell has been constant in the Middle East is the Palestinian Arabs, and especially Hamas, they’ve cared more about destroying Israel than they have cared about taking care of their own citizens. And that has been the obstacle to peace for many, many years,” DeSantis said.
However, given the President’s presence, DeSantis voiced optimism that “hopefully, we can end up with peace in the region at long last.”
While the Governor didn’t go as far as U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, who believes the President’s initiatives warrant the Nobel Peace Prize, his confidence in Trump is noteworthy.
DeSantis has positioned himself as a staunch ally of Israel, going so far as to say that historical observers “could trace back the history of Western civilization all the way back to the ancient state of Israel and the birth of both Judaism and Christianity, and we wouldn’t have the United States of America if it didn’t trace back to that.”
