Ron DeSantis says Adam Schiff would have botched Constitution, Revolution

A press conference offered occasion for unique speculation.

As Americans celebrate Constitution Day, Gov. Ron DeSantis is bashing a Democratic Senator from California, saying he and those like him couldn’t have formed America into the nation it is today.

“How would this have worked back in 1776, 1787, if instead of like a Benjamin Franklin, you had people like Adam Schiff,” DeSantis pondered during a press conference in Apalachicola. “Would it have done well? I mean, I think it probably would not have done well.”

It’s unclear why DeSantis invoked the name of the Democrat with whom he served in the House. But it’s not the first time he’s used this trope of unfavorably comparing Californians from the other party to Founding Fathers.

“Could you imagine if, like, they had to do a Constitution now and you had people like (NancyPelosi that had to be involved in it? I mean they would crash, right?” DeSantis said at a homeschooler convention in May.

Again, it was unclear why Pelosi wouldn’t have been able to navigate the beginning of the country, beyond restrictions on women’s suffrage that would have blocked her from the process.

DeSantis and Schiff haven’t interacted in headlines for a couple of years.

Schiff criticized DeSantis for saying in 2023 that he would not participate in the extradition of Donald Trump, calling the Governor out for a “cowardly attempt” to “try to compete with Donald Trump on Trump’s own turf.”

Trump voluntarily surrendered, making DeSantis’ declaration moot.
