Gov. Ron DeSantis says he is too busy cooking up policy victories to worry about dishing out dessert.
That’s the message he gave during a press conference when he was pressed about not endorsing a potential successor in the Governor’s race.
“I’m frying these fish. I mean, people will ask me political questions and I respect that, but at the same time, I’m not getting into any political (questions) until I really get this (done),” DeSantis said.
DeSantis did endorse Senate candidate Chris Nocco, the Pasco County Sheriff who spoke at Monday’s event in favor of the property tax reduction amendment being considered this week by the Legislature. But DeSantis noted that Nocco came to the press conference and was “helping” sell the initiative, so it was an “easy thing to do here.”
The best thing candidates can do, DeSantis said, is to support what he’s trying to do.
“Generally speaking, we’re not going to be involved. We’ve got to land on property tax. We’ve got to get it on the ballot. I know there’s a lot of folks, I’m assuming, that are running for these offices (who) are going to be supportive of helping out homeowners, because I think people need relief. And so I anticipate those folks running for various offices are going to be supportive of this,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis made similar comments Sunday on Fox News when asked who he backed for Governor, saying “unfinished business” took priority over campaign season. Lt. Gov. Jay Collins and former House Speaker Paul Renner have aggressively courted his endorsement.
The Republican gubernatorial Primary is August 18.
