Rick Scott wonders if U.S. belongs in NATO

As the military action in Iran continues, NATO partners of the United States are letting America go it alone.

In that context, U.S. Sen. Rick Scott wonders whether there is any point of the U.S. remaining in the 32-country alliance.

“I think we need to look at what’s the value to America of NATO if they’re not going to put up the money to defend themselves,” Scott told WFLA host Ryan Gorman.

“Look at Canada. Canada barely spends any money to protect itself. If they’re not going to spend their own money, and then they’re not going to show up when we ask them to show up, and then not allow us to use military bases we built, what’s the upside for us? I mean, it’s a complete one-way street.”

President Donald Trump said Monday that the American commitment to the trans-Atlantic consortium is under “very serious examination.”

“I’m very disappointed in NATO. They weren’t there for us. We pay trillions of dollars for NATO, and they weren’t there for us,” he said, per Fox News.

Scott said Trump had to take action since Iran was “rebuilding their nuclear program.”

“They still had the enriched uranium, and they were not that far away from being able to rebuild their program. So we didn’t have a choice,” Scott said.
