Responding to impeachment calls, Rick Scott likens Donald Trump to Abraham Lincoln, FDR, Harry Truman

U.S. Sen. Rick Scott is comparing President Donald Trump to some of the most storied chief executives in American history.

Scott made the case to argue congressional Democrats would have pushed to remove previous Presidents from office for taking big steps during challenging times for the country.

“The Democrats are insane,” the Naples Republican said on “Varney and Co.“

“If the Democrats were in power when (President Abraham) Lincoln allowed (General William Tecumseh) Sherman to destroy the South, they would have impeached him, or when (President Franklin Delano) Roosevelt destroyed the infrastructure of Germany, they would have impeached him, or when (President Harry) Truman used the atomic bomb against Japan, they would have impeached him. These people are insane.”

Florida Democratic members of the delegation have not called for Trump’s impeachment, but a number of congressional Democrats from other states have.

U.S. Rep. John Larson of Connecticut has filed a measure seeking to remove the President for “high crimes and misdemeanors.” He alleges Trump has “unconstitutionally initiated war as a belligerent or co-belligerent against Iran, Yemen, Lebanon, Syria, Nigeria, and Gaza” and “threatened military force against Panama, Colombia, Cuba, and Greenland … without constitutionally required congressional authorization.”

U.S. Reps. Diana Degette, Sara Jacobs, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Paul Tonko have also called for impeachment or removal via the 25th Amendment, and have alleged that the President is “unhinged” and “threatening war crimes.”

Republicans control the House and the Senate, which would make an impeachment effort difficult unless Democrats take control in the Midterms.

The House would have to recommend a trial in the Senate, where a supermajority is required to convict. That means for an effort to work, Democrats would have to flip both chambers and moot the voices of Trump-friendly Democrats like U.S. Sen. John Fetterman, who has become disillusioned with his party since winning election in 2022.

Trump was impeached twice already. In 2019, the House alleged he had abused his power and obstructed Congress by not providing aid to Ukraine in the face of conflict with Russia. In 2021, the House alleged he contributed to the insurrection on Jan. 6 of that year. Trump was acquitted in both cases.
