Plenty of candidates to be the next Florida State Head Coach

FSU Pays Huge Financial Price to Reset Football Program Ahead of National Search

The Mike Norvell era at Florida State is over, bringing a close to one of the most volatile and expensive head coaching runs in modern college football history. By terminating Norvell midway through the 2026 season following a 36-24 loss to Clemson, Florida State committed to paying out a buyout check exceeding $50 million.

The massive buyout structure was secured by Norvell after his undefeated 2023 regular season, leveraging interest from other national programs into an eight-year, $84 million contract extension. However, after posting three consecutive losing stretches and dropping 17 of his last 21 ACC matchups, FSU administrators and major boosters concluded that absorbing the third-largest buyout check in history was necessary to prevent total program apathy.

Inside the Program Reset and Interim Transition

Former Middle Tennessee head coach and current FSU staff member Rick Stockstill steps in as interim head coach to lead the Seminoles through the final stretch of the 2026 schedule. The university faces a complete administrative setup, requiring Board Chairman Peter Collins and school leadership to run parallel searches for both a permanent athletic director and a head coach.

While the $50 million financial hit limits early budget flexibility, Florida State’s brand recognition, upgraded stadium facilities, and access to elite talent keep the vacancy near the top of national interest. FSU leadership intends to move aggressively in the head coaching market before the winter transfer portal window opens.

Early Replacement Candidates for Florida State

As Florida State launches its national coaching search, several high-profile options and targeted offensive coordinators are expected to surface:

  • Manny Diaz (Duke Head Coach): The former Miami head coach and Penn State defensive coordinator has quietly built Duke into an ACC contender. His deep recruiting ties across the state of Florida and proven head coaching experience make him an immediate administrative target.
  • Jake Dickert (Wake Forest Head Coach): Recognized for his strong program culture and defensive mind, Dickert remains a steady candidate capable of bringing structural stability back to Tallahassee.
  • Buster Faulkner (Florida State / SEC Connection): An offensive play-caller with widespread Southeast recruiting links who has consistently elevated high-powered offenses in the ACC and SEC.
  • Rhett Lashlee (SMU Head Coach): The former Miami offensive coordinator has proven he can build modern, fast-paced offenses and win in the ACC footprint.
  • Kenny Dillingham (Arizona State Head Coach): A former FSU offensive coordinator under Norvell, Dillingham is viewed as a rising star in the coaching ranks, though bringing him back from his alma mater would require another substantial financial commitment.
