Construction started this week on a new center to advance agricultural technology and artificial intelligence, specifically for Florida farmers.
FloridaCommerce announced the groundbreaking of the University of Florida (UF) Institute of Food and Agriculture Sciences Center (UF/IFAS) for Applied Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture. It’s part of the state’s push to advance agricultural innovation and competitiveness.
“Florida is leading the nation in innovation and technology, and formally recognizing AgTech as a targeted industry highlights our state’s commitment to advancing technologies that safeguard America’s future,” said Florida Secretary of Commerce J. Alex Kelly.
“From information technology to data-driven systems that strengthen supply chains and resource management, the technology behind AgTech represents a vital frontier in both economic competitiveness and national security. By investing in these emerging technologies and supporting institutions like the UF/IFAS Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture, Florida is ensuring we remain at the forefront of innovation that protects and powers our nation.”
The center’s construction begins as FloridaCommerce and the Florida Small Business Development Center network across the state have been engaged in a tour designed to enhance Florida’s Rural Business Resources. The Initiative is designed to increase resources to Florida’s rural entrepreneurs. FloridaCommerce has simultaneously disbursed increasing funds to rural businesses across several areas of the state.
Just last week, some $1.5 million was distributed to more than two dozen rural communities to help develop increased technical assistance.
The new AgTech center reflects that commitment.
“Under Gov. Ron DeSantis’ leadership, (this) marks a significant step forward for Florida’s AgTech industry,” said Scott Angle, University of Florida senior vice president for Agriculture and Natural Resources and head of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS).
“Monday’s groundbreaking will help Florida’s farmers harness cutting-edge innovation to strengthen our agricultural systems — because when we grow our own safe, reliable food supply, our state and our nation are more secure. As Florida prioritizes AgTech as a target industry, we will continue to see projects like this move faster and farther, turning research into real-world solutions that advance and protect our agricultural future.”
