Among all liberal arts schools, public and private, New College tied at No. 135 with Eckerd College.

New College of Florida held onto a top 10 spot in U.S. News & World Report’s list of Public Liberal Arts Colleges.

The Sarasota public university, which saw record enrollment this academic year, also appears on the list of all National Liberal Arts Colleges at No. 135, and on the Top Performers on Social Mobility list at No. 101.

The rankings considered the school’s enrollment at the start of 2024, when it had more than 850 students at the start of the Fall term.

New College’s best performance was on the list of liberal arts schools that are publicly funded, where it tied with the University of New Hampshire at Manchester and the University of North Carolina-Asheville.

That list has traditionally been led by U.S. military academies, with the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis topping the list this year. The highest-ranking non-military academy was St. Mary’s College of Maryland at No. 5.

U.S. News & World Report noted several metrics about New College, which is by statute Florida’s honors college within the state public university system.

The school in the last full academic year had a 73% acceptance rate, with the average high school grade point average for students sitting at 3.8. The school accepted students with SAT scores ranging from 1060 to 1246 and ACT scores running from 21 to 27.

The National Liberal Arts Colleges list, which also includes private schools, was topped this year by Williams College in Massachusetts. New College’s No. 135 ranking tied it with Claflin University in South Carolina; Concordia College-Moorehead in Minnesota; Eckerd College in St. Petersburg; Emmanuel College in Massachusetts; Hollins University in Virginia; the University of New Hampshire at Manchester; and the University of North Carolina-Asheville.

That means New College and Eckerd College tied as the top-ranked liberal arts college, public or private. Ave Maria University in Collier County was ranked No. 175.
