The team is for sale.
Major League Baseball’s San Diego Padres franchise is up for sale and the business has a deal with the city of San Diego to use the town’s stadium through 2033. But that has not stopped speculation that new owners will move the team in 2034. The business’s chairman John Seidler said whoever buys the baseball team will keep the team in San Diego. “The Padres aren’t moving from San Diego,” he said. “I can’t speak as to any details as to what may or may not be negotiated with an ultimate buyer. But if you look, a new buyer would be nuts to move the team out of San Diego, with the second-highest attendance in all of baseball last year. San Diego’s a great place for baseball. Baseball is the only major sport in San Diego right now. So, the opportunity is in San Diego, not elsewhere.”
Seidler is wrong about baseball being the only major sport in San Diego as there is a Major League Soccer franchise in the town. Nonetheless, Seidler does have a Major League Baseball team on the market in a city that has supported the team. “We’ve had tremendous interest,” he said. “Some parties have been reported in the press, others have not. There are more parties interested than have been reported. Over the next few months, the process will come to a logical conclusion.” In November 2025, the family of the team’s late owner Peter Seidler announced that they were exploring a potential sale of the team. “During the process and as we prepare for the 2026 season, the Padres will continue to focus on its players, employees, fans and community while putting every resource into winning a World Series championship,” John Seidler wrote. “We remain fully committed to this team, its fans, and the San Diego community.” The Padres franchise sale process continues.
