As Florida’s hurricane season comes to an end next week, local officials and emergency managers are already preparing for the challenges of the upcoming year.
Meta’s AI for Good team is collaborating with Florida officials to introduce artificial intelligence tools designed to predict, prepare for, and respond to extreme weather events. Two key tools in this initiative are Meta’s Llama and Segment Anything AI models, which can enhance communication during emergencies.
Over 90% of Floridians express concerns about hurricane preparedness, and the state boasts the highest percentage of households with disaster preparedness kits in the nation. These statistics highlight strong resident interest in emergency preparedness, especially given Florida’s status as one of the most disaster-prone states in the country.
Meta’s AI tools are already being utilized by research institutions, nonprofits, and emergency agencies in other disaster-prone states. For instance:
— Texas A&M researchers collaborated with emergency services in Harris County to showcase how the Llama model can improve situational awareness during crises.
— In Pennsylvania, Meta partnered with the University of Pennsylvania to conduct a workshop with emergency service teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, and Maryland, focusing on the application of innovative AI and data in preparation for the 2026 World Cup. This collaboration will expand in the months leading up to the event.
— In California, the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services has used Meta’s data to enhance wildfire response efforts and has organized workshops to further integrate Meta AI into disaster planning.
