Mayfield praised running back Kenny Gainwell as far more than a gadget player, calling him a smooth route runner with strong vision in the run game. He said Gainwell’s background as a college slot receiver shows up every day and that his presence gives Bucky Irving a valuable complement. Mayfield also highlighted Ted Hurst III, who has quickly become a reliable target. At 6‑foot‑4, Hurst is winning contested catches, high‑pointing the ball, and showing physicality in the run game. Mayfield said Hurst is developing into a red‑zone option similar to how the team used Mike Evans in critical moments.

Mayfield said the defense looks “completely different” with new talent and deeper rotations up front. Even without Vita Vea practicing, he sees a unit that disrupts timing and forces quarterbacks to adjust. He pointed to SirVocea Dennis, Alex Anzalone, and rookie Josiah Trotter as players who have elevated the linebacker group. Trotter’s confidence and physicality stood out, with Mayfield saying he “is not a rookie” in the way he carries himself.
Sharp, Daniels, and Young Players Impress
Rookie tight end Bauer Sharp continues to earn praise from both Mayfield and Todd Bowles. Sharp’s quickness at the top of routes and growing commitment to blocking have positioned him well in a crowded tight end room. Mayfield also noted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels’ arm talent and rapid improvement from spring to now, saying Daniels embraces every moment and has made significant strides in command of the offense.

Mayfield said he expects the Buccaneers to “shock a lot of people” this season. He’s aware of predictions that Tampa Bay will struggle, but he dismissed them, saying he is “hell yeah” confident in the roster. With preseason reps ahead and a road opener against Cincinnati, Mayfield believes the team’s energy, depth, and competitiveness are setting the tone for a strong start.
