Gospel singer and bishop Marvin Sapp is under fire for his unorthodox way of asking church members for donations … because he’s on video telling ushers to close the doors until a huge goal is met.
Resurfaced video from Marvin’s sermon at the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World annual summer convention is going viral … and folks are taking issue with Marvin’s fundraising style.
In the clip, the gospel music legend-turned-preacher tells the ushers to close the doors until the 1,000 worshipers in the building donate $20 each.
Marvin then tells the thousands of folks watching the live stream to pony up $20 as well.
He says it’s an easy way to raise $40,000 for the church … and he says all the pastors on stage need to cough up $100.
Marvin takes out his bankroll and puts his money where his mouth is … but then some folks say he puts his foot in his mouth by telling people in the building to physically come up to the stage and show him their donations.
Cash is king but Marvin says electronic payments work too … and he says anyone donating with their phones need to prove they sent the money.
The big issue here for most folks online is Marvin instructing the ushers to close the doors … with some going so far as to claim he was holding people hostage. Police tell us they were not called.
Marvin’s plea happened after he sang and preached at the 2024 PAW Convention in Baltimore back in July … but the video’s just now getting traction, and stirring debate.
Wednesday night, Sapp posted a response on Facebook to the public outcry about the video … he says, in part, “My directive was not about control it was about creating a safe, focused, and reverent environment for those choosing to give, and for those handling the resources.”
We reached out to Marvin … so far no word back.

A highly coveted Shohei Ohtani card just sold for some insane coin at auction — a record $1,067,500, to be exact!
The 1-of-1 autographed card — which features a piece of Ohtani’s pants when he reached the 50/50 club — is from Topps’ “Dynasty Black” line and has a PSA Mint 9 Auto 9 grade.
The rare memorabilia was made available by Heritage Auctions … and once bidding closed on Saturday, the final price tag was revealed.
The 2024 card features the MLB patch from Ohanti’s trousers … and is signed by the 30-year-old Japanese superstar with a gold Sharpie.
“Shohei Ohtani is the biggest star in the game, an icon in the United States and in Japan, and what he did last year was previously thought to be impossible,” Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage Auctions, tells TMZ Sports.
“Keep in mind, only 47 players have had 30 homers and 30 steals in a season, and when you go to 40 and 40, that number shrinks to six. But 50/50 is a one-man club — he’s it. It’s fitting that a group of one is commemorated on a 1-of-1 card, and this is that card.”
It’s no shock that Ohtani’s memorabilia sells for staggering amounts when he’s considered one of the greatest MLB players of all time.

And If you think you’ll have better luck grabbing some retail merch, think again. His Murakami Fanatics collab merch sold out in minutes when the Dodgers were in Japan for the Tokyo Series to start the season earlier this month.

Kanye West is standing by his controversial post about Jay-Z‘s kids … asking DJ Akademiks if he really went too far with it — or, if it was actually one of his best.
The controversial rapper sat down for an interview with the rapper — released earlier Sunday — and, during it Kanye addressed his social media presence … claiming he’s popping off on X because he’s finally able to vent his raw thoughts without immediately facing a ban.
West then makes a bold statement … claiming his post about Jay-Z’s kids makes the “Nazi-s***” not seem as bad — a point Akademiks kind of agrees with ’cause he says he feels like Kanye’s post about Jay-Z’s kids was by far his worst.
Kanye then stops Akademiks short … asking if it was really his worst — or, perhaps one of his “best or the strongest” which brings the conversation to a very awkward end.
ICYMI … Kanye posted earlier this month about Jay-Z’s younger kids — 7-year-old twins Rumi and Sir — asking, “Wait has anyone ever seen Jay-Z and Beyonce’s younger kids” … before questioning their mental capacity.
Many online were outraged … and, Beyoncé’s mother Tina Knowles shared her what seemed to be a response to the post in a video on Instagram — writing in the caption, “…it’s hard to remain positive and classy in the face of ignorance and evil.”
Of course, Kanye’s social media account has been full of unhinged messages in the past few months … many of them antisemitic in nature.
It seems there’s at least one he’s not walking back … even if Jay used to be a close collaborator.

San Diego Comic-Con is still a few months away … but, SoCal saw a whole lot of great costumes by cosplayers who hit up this year’s edition of WonderCon.
We’ve complied pics of the best looks from the weekend convention in Anaheim … with attendees dressed as characters film, television, video games and even theme parks!
A huge swath of fans proved they’re committed to the way of “The Mandalorian” … covering their faces in the iconic masks and hanging in one big group — comfortable among their warrior pals.
The event also brought out Walter White — surrounded by the ghosts from the Haunted Mansion ride. Not exactly his normal company … but, he did help a number of people reach the other side in “Breaking Bad,” we suppose.
And, everyone’s favorite archaeologist stopped to take a pic too … ’cause a bunch of people dressed as Indiana Jones — and a couple wearing Short Round outfits — posed together.
WonderCon features more than 900 exhibitors hocking comic books, toys, original art and other merchandise … and, each year it brings thousands to Anaheim to dress up, eat and shop.
The convention ends in about an hour … but, it’ll be back next year — and, these fans’ costumes will certainly never be forgotten!
