Lightning drive record NHL viewership surge on ESPN platforms

The Tampa Bay Lightning did more than play marquee hockey this season. They helped power the most watched NHL season of the current ESPN rights era, and they did it on one of the biggest regular season stages the league has ever seen.

ESPN and ABC averaged 760,000 viewers across 54 games, a 30 percent jump from last season and the highest mark since the network regained NHL rights in 2021. The Lightning stood at the center of that surge, most notably in the 2026 NHL Stadium Series against the Boston Bruins. That outdoor matchup delivered 2.1 million viewers, which set a record for the most watched regular season NHL game ever on cable.

That number matters beyond one night. It signals how a Sun Belt franchise continues to drive national relevance in a sport that historically leaned on northern markets. Tampa Bay has built a consistent on ice product, but just as importantly, the team now commands national television appeal.

The Stadium Series audience jumped 30 percent from the previous year’s event, and ESPN recorded its most watched NHL regular season game ever. The Lightning’s brand, combined with the Bruins’ legacy presence, created a matchup that felt big and delivered accordingly.

ESPN also placed nine of the ten most watched NHL games this season across all networks, which shows how its scheduling strategy leaned into star driven matchups and event windows. Tampa Bay appeared in several of those high profile slots, reinforcing its role as a ratings engine.

The broader numbers support the same story. Games on ESPN averaged 602,000 viewers, up 48 percent year over year. ABC games reached 1.1 million viewers, up 33 percent. Both platforms set new highs for the current rights deal.

The audience growth extended across key demographics. Female viewership jumped 36 percent, younger viewers aged 2 to 17 rose 46 percent, and the critical 25 to 34 demo increased 32 percent. Those gains suggest the NHL, with teams like the Lightning leading the charge, continues to expand beyond its traditional base.

Event programming also contributed to the momentum. Opening Night delivered 768,000 viewers, while the Frozen Frenzy tripleheader, featuring all 32 teams, increased 20 percent year over year. Still, no single game matched the Lightning’s impact in the Stadium Series.

For Tampa Bay, this goes beyond one ratings headline. The franchise now sits firmly in the league’s national spotlight, not just as a competitive force but as a television draw. In a media landscape where leagues chase consistent national numbers, the Lightning have become one of the NHL’s most reliable drivers of audience growth.
