Let ’em Run Review of 2/14/26 and Preview of 2/21/26
Valentine’s Day weekend delivered another exciting chapter on the road to the Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks, as contenders continued to sort themselves out and early favorites strengthened their cases. While there were no earth-shattering upsets, the races at the Fair Grounds showed just how deep and competitive this year’s fields are shaping up to be. Our selections were competitive across the board, although we had another case of “seconditis”, and the action set the stage for an even bigger week ahead. Here’s a breakdown of how our picks performed for Let ’em Run.
Fair Grounds Races 8–12
Race 8 The favorite #1 Medoro hit the board in second place. On our Saturday podcast, we strongly highlighted the eventual winner, #4 Expensive Queen, who delivered and paid a solid $10.40. Jockey Luis Saez guided her to victory and capped an impressive day with four total wins.
Race 9 #6 Hit Show took top honors as expected. Our pick, #2 Accelerize, went straight to the front and set the pace but was tracked patiently by Hit Show and caught right at the wire. Credit goes to jockey Florent Geroux for a perfectly timed ride that prevented an easy lead.
Race 10 Our top choice, #6 Montador, finished second in a tightly contested race. We suggested #2 Brilliant Berti and #9 Lagynos might be fades, but Lagynos proved us wrong by winning. Still, all of the top three finishers were horses we had identified as serious contenders.
Race 11 Our pick of the day, #6 Luv Your Neighbor, checked many of our boxes but had to settle for second behind the favorite, #3 Bella Ballerina. Bella Ballerina showed she was the class of the field, but Luv Your Neighbor remains a runner to watch heading toward the first Friday in May.
Race 12 The featured race lived up to expectations. Heavy favorite #4 Paladin justified the confidence, closing strongly to overtake front-runner #5 Chip Honcho. My partner John Kostin was particularly high on Chip Honcho, keeping that runner firmly on his radar.
Betting Recap
Our Saturday podcast featured a Pick 5 ticket that needed a couple of price horses to land on top for a bigger payoff. The sequence returned $172.75 for 50 cents on a $150 ticket — a modest return, but momentum continues as we look ahead to the Mandatory Rainbow Pick 6 at Gulfstream.
